BOX ELDER COUNTY — The body of a 51-year-old Weber County man has been recovered after a swimming incident at Willard Bay State Park.
On Saturday evening, Robert Mittendorf was swimming with his son near their boat when a sudden storm swept through the area, according to Lindsay Higbee with the Utah Department of Natural Resources.
Both were swimming without life jackets when they became separated from their boat. Mittendorf’s son managed to swim back to retrieve a life jacket for his father, but Mittendorf went under the water and did not resurface.
Higbee said Utah State Parks law enforcement rangers initiated an immediate search, assisted by the Willard City Police Department, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Division of Outdoor Recreation rangers, Utah Department of Public Safety, and the Box Elder and Weber County Search and Rescue teams.
The search, which spanned a mile-wide area, continued well into the night on Saturday and resumed at first light on Sunday. Despite challenging conditions, including murky water, the teams continued searching.
Mittendorf’s body was recovered Tuesday morning in the southeast corner of the bay, in an area known as Freeway Bay.
Higbee said the Utah Division of State Parks extends their deepest condolences to Mittendorf’s family and friends during this difficult time. They also express their sincere gratitude to the agencies that assisted in the search and recovery efforts. Their dedication and coordinated efforts were instrumental in bringing closure to this tragic incident.
