LOGAN – Another local protest gathering against Trump administration policies has been scheduled to take place at the Cache County Historic Courthouse on Saturday, May 3.
Organized by a group calling itself “We The People – Cache Valley,” the protest event will begin at noon with music and sing-alongs, to be followed by speeches and other activities around 12:30 p.m.
All residents of Cache Valley and surrounding areas are invited to join the rally in support of democracy, civil rights and equality, according to Sue Jelus, one the other event’s organizers.
Attendees are also being encouraged to “bring three friends, bring ideas and bring joy,” she adds.
Protest organizers have billed WTP.CV as a non-partisan, pro-democracy group that supports freedom of the press and the integrity of government institutions.
Without specifically mentioning President Donald Trump or any members of his administration, the group cites a long list of grievances that the protest event will highlight, including job and business loses; harassment; the defunding of services; detrimental impacts on veterans and medical benefits; as well as attacks on women’s and Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Trans and Questioning rights.
A month previously, the Cache County Historic Courthouse was the site of another protest against Trump policies on April 5 that drew a peaceful crowd estimated at more than 200.
That event was part of a National Day of Action across the country, with rallies in big cities like Washington, Philadelphia, Chicago and others in more than 1,000 communities both large and small. The event was organized by a coalition of anti-Trump groups under the aegis of “HandsOFF!”
The circumstances surrounding Saturday’s scheduled rally are similar, with more than a 1,000 protests associated with May Day planned by local organizations across the nation.
May Day has several meanings, but in most countries that event is thought to commemorate the historic struggles by workers and the labor movement.
Those May Day protests are being organized by the 50501 Movement, a grassroots initiative born on social media that represents 50 protests, 50 states and one day by urging citizen to take part in nonviolent marches, rallies, protests and walk-ins as part of another National Day of Action.
Organizers say the event here in Cache Valley will celebrate democratic values and offer a platform for attendees to share personal stories during an open-microphone session.
They also add that the event will emphasize the importance of local elections by encouraging attendees to consider running for offices or supporting candidates who uphold democratic values.
