BOX ELDER COUNTY — A 77-year-old woman died in a wrong-way crash Tuesday afternoon southwest of Tremonton. The accident was reported at 11:44 a.m. along northbound Interstate-15, just north of milepost 377.

The Utah Highway Patrol reports the woman was driving a gray Ford Focus southbound in the northbound lanes of I-15. A white Toyota 4Runner was northbound and struck the Ford Focus head-on.

Troopers report both vehicles went into the median up against the cable barrier. The 4Runner rolled onto its side.

A witness reported that he may have seen the Ford Focus make a U-turn to go southbound from the northbound on-ramp immediately before collision.

Troopers report the female driver of the Ford Focus sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene. She was not wearing a seat belt.

The female driver of the 4Runner was transported to a local hospital. She was then flown to a trauma center with critical but non-life threatening injuries.

Northbound lanes of I-15 were closed for approximately two hours and reopened at about 2:00 pm. Traffic was diverted off the 377 exit while the crash was being cleared.

Troopers didn’t release the identity of the woman who was driving the Ford Focus, pending notification of family. They are continuing to investigate why she made a U-turn.
