LOGAN – It began in 1987 as a small gathering of university professors seeking affordable ways to augment aerospace engineering education through the creation of miniature satellites.
Saturday at least 3,700 participants will gather at Utah State University for the 38th Small Satellite Conference, held every August in Logan.
Known as SmallSat, despite its significant growth the conference has remained in Logan, a decision driven by the desire to preserve its character and manage costs. Because it has become a pivotal event in the space industry, some organizers are estimating close to 4,000 attendees might be on hand this week.
Attendees range from military officers and industry professionals to professors and students, engaged in discussions on various aspects of small satellites. Committee members, staff and volunteers evaluate hundreds of proposals for technical sessions, talks and poster sessions.
SmallSat is hosted by USU and managed by the Space Dynamics Laboratory.
This year’s theme is “Automation, Enabling New Capabilities.”
