LOGAN — A 40-year-old Wellsville woman has been ordered to return almost $180,000 she stole from a Hyrum grocery store. Jolene Ann Hervey was sentenced to three years’ probation after admitting to passing multiple bad checks to Ridley’s Family Market.
According to court records, Hervey was sentenced September 9, in Logan’s 1st District Court. She previously pleaded guilty to three counts of issuing a bad check and one count of pattern of unlawful activity, amended to third-degree felonies; and one count of issuing a bad check, a class A misdemeanor.
On Nov. 16, 2022, Cache County Sheriff’s deputies received a call from employees at the store. They reported Hervey passed multiple bad checks between September 2021 and November 2022.
It was reported to deputies that Hervey passed 393 checks, totaling approximately $178,000. The checks were written from four different bank accounts, court records detailed.
Deputies subpoenaed information from the four banks. They all reported the accounts had been opened by Hervey and later closed at the time the checks were written.
During Hervey’s sentencing, Judge Angela Fonnesbeck sentenced the Wellsville woman to serve 36 months’ probation and pay $173,303 plus interest to the grocery store. Hervey was also ordered to complete shoplifting and personal responsibility courses.
