Karl Ward has defeated Casey Saxton 71.1% to 28.9% in the lone local race in Tuesday’s Republican primary. Ward and Saxton were competing for the Logan District 1 seat on the Cache County Council vacated by Cory Yeates when he announced he would not run for re-election.
Only registered Republicans who live within the boundaries of the Logan District 1 could vote in the primary. According to the Cache County Clerk’s office, Ward defeated Saxton by a margin of 681 votes to 277 votes. There is no Democratic challenger for the county seat so Ward effectively becomes the nominee.
Ward previously served on the Logan City Council and Saxton is currently the Secretary for the Cache County Republican Party.
Cache County Republicans also voted unanimously in favor of Governor Gary Herbert over challenger Jonathan Johnson, 75.7% to 24.3%.
In the non-closed, Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, Cache County voters favored Misty Snow with 432 votes over Jonathan Swinton with 368 votes.
