SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Rep. Dan Johnson (R-Logan) was transported to a Salt Lake City hospital via ambulance after suffering a medical emergency on the floor of the state Capitol.
The ambulance transport was described as a “precautionary measure” by a legislative spokesperson at the Capitol.
The incident began just after 2 p.m. as Johnson and other lawmakers convened for an afternoon session. When other representatives nearby noticed that Johnson needed assistance, he was attended by Rep. Raymond Ward (R-Bountiful), a physician.
After receiving treatment in the House Lounge, Johnson was attended by paramedics who then transported him to a nearby hospital.
Lawmakers on the scene described Johnson as being “conscious and sitting up” while being transported to the ambulance on a gurney.
Johnson suffered an earlier medical emergency in Logan in the studios of KVNU on Jan. 2, where he planned to announce that he did not intend to seek re-election.
At that time, Johnson was attended to immediately by Cache Valley Media Group staff and then by responding paramedic personnel. He was taken by ambulance to an area hospital where he received treatment and recovered in time to attend the Legislative session that began on Jan. 16.
In addition to serving the public as a lawmaker since 2018, Johnson has been an educator for over 50 years, most of those years as an administrator. He served as the Director of Edith Bowen Laboratory School on the USU campus and as the Assistant Superintendent for the Tooele County School District.
Previously, Johnson served as principal at Mount Logan Middle School for 17 years.
