SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah System of Higher Education has seen a surge in enrollment this year, with Utah’s public colleges and universities all seeing increased enrollment.

According to a report released Wednesday, Utah saw a 2 percent increase and a net gain of more than 3,400 students attending public colleges. Utah Valley University had a six percent increase in students, making it the largest institution of higher learning in the state. Southern Utah University saw the largest gain, with 16 percent more students enrolling than last year.

Education leaders say the increase is largely due to students returning from Mormon missions. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints lowered the age requirement for missionary service in 2012.
