SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – The Utah court system will make a big change Monday by opening trial proceedings to television and radio coverage.

The judiciary has adopted a rule saying courts will be open to broadcast coverage as a general rule.

Judges can still close proceedings for good cause.

Also, the courts will allow people to use smart phones, laptops, computer tablets and other portable electronics inside the courtrooms.

The Radio Television Digital News Association says Utah is joining 37 states that routinely allow broadcast coverage of trial proceedings.

Some judges in Utah were opposed to broadcast coverage as a general rule. They fear judges will lose control of proceedings, or that cameras will intimidate victims or witnesses.
