SALT LAKE CITY – With the general election less than 30 days away, the Utah Debate Commission has announced the schedule of its upcoming events, including two candidate face-offs of particular interest to residents and voters here in northern Utah.

The debate between candidates in the 1st Congressional District is slated for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at Utah State University.

The debate between candidates for the U.S. Senate will be held at Weber State University in Ogden on Thursday, Oct. 10. That event is also expected to start at 6 p.m.

All of the remaining UDC debates are being held on the campuses of universities across the state in an effort to involve both students and the members of the public, according to Mary Weaver Bennett, the chair of the commission’s University Committee and the Director of the Center for Politics and Public Service at Southern Utah University in Cedar City.

The debate in the 1st Congressional District will feature incumbent, two-term U.S. Rep. Blake Moore (R-UT), Democratic challenger Bill Campbell and Daniel R. Cottam, who is a Libertarian.

The face-off between candidates in the running for the seat in the U.S. Senate now occupied by Mitt Romney (R-UT) will feature U.S. Rep. John Curtis (R-UT), Democratic challenger Caroline Gleich and Carlton E. Bowen, an Independent.

The event at USU on Oct. 8 will be moderated by Natalie Gochnour, the associate dean of the David Eccles School of Business and director of the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute at the University of Utah.

The CD1 debate will be held in Room 216 of the Eccles Conference Center on the USU campus. Due to limited seating, USU officials say that free tickets to the debate should be reserved in advance by going online to https://tinyurl.com/CD1debateUSU

The doors of the auditorium will be opened at 5:15 p.m. on Oct. 8 and the UDC officials request that all ticket holders be seated by 5:50 p.m.

USU officials also warn that no carry bags will be allowed in the auditorium during the debate.

The 1st Congressional Debate will be broadcast live on KVNU 102.1 FM / 610 AM starting at 6 p.m.
