LOGAN — Utah State University officials and local law enforcement are investigating after an alleged sexual assault occurred Sunday night in the Logan Cemetery. The rape was reported Tuesday, prompting school administrators to issue an alert to students and faculty.
According to the alert, the perpetrator was described as an adult male, and a knife was used in the facilitation of the alleged crime. It reportedly occurred around 8 p.m. Sept. 22, within the cemetery, adjacent to the Logan campus.
Logan City Police Lt. Derek Dickey said they are aware of the reported incident since the cemetery is within their jurisdiction.
The alleged victim reportedly went to the Cache Valley Hospital after the rape occurred and received medical care. After discussing what took place with several friends, a report was made Tuesday to the University’s Title 9 Office, which then notified law enforcement.
Dickey said the alleged victim has not wanted to speak to police yet, and asked for privacy. Investigators are respecting her wish and will be available to help when she is ready.
USU officials said everyone on campus has a responsibility to make the community safe. They also stressed that it is never possible to completely eliminate the risk of becoming the target of a crime, and a crime is never the fault of the victim.
The alert advised the campus community to pay attention to their surroundings and report any suspicious behavior.
