LOGAN — A 22-year-old Utah State University student has been sentenced to jail and probation for sexually assaulting another student last year.
According to court records, Nolan Forrest Hoyt was sentenced Aug. 19 in Logan’s 1st District Court. He previously pleaded guilty to a Class A misdemeanor count of sexual battery and a Class B misdemeanor count of lewdness.
Hoyt was arrested April 16, 2025, following an investigation by the USU Police Department. The victim called police to report the incident on March 30, 2025, stating she and Hoyt had been friends.
On the night of the incident, the woman said she had fallen asleep at Hoyt’s apartment. In the middle of the night, she woke up to find the defendant molesting her and inappropriately touching himself.
The victim said she was in shock and did not know what to do. Soon after, she left for her own apartment and told her roommates what had happened.
The woman later confronted Hoyt about the incident in a recorded phone call. He admitted to touching her without her consent and blamed his actions on being stupid, according to court documents.
Police contacted Hoyt and questioned him about the assault. He told officers he had done something he shouldn’t have, acknowledging he heard the woman snoring and touched her without her consent.
During the Aug. 19 sentencing, Hoyt was ordered to serve 24 days in the Cache County Jail. Upon release, he will be placed on probation for 24 months.
