LOGAN — A 18-year-old man Utah State University student died Thursday afternoon after a reported traumatic injury at Beaver Mountain Ski Resort, east of Logan.

Cache County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Peterson said Tyson L. Shoemaker of Camano Island, Washington died of blunt force trauma when he lost control while skiing, and ran off a groomed run where he struck a tree.

Other skiers witnessed Shoemaker strike the tree and notified the ski patrol. He was found unresponsive. Immediate lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful.

Peterson said Shoemaker was wearing a helmet. Investigators are initially ruling the death as an accident. The State Medical Examiner’s Office is determining the exact cause of death.

The accident occurred around 2 p.m. Medical crews from the Logan City Fire Department were called to the accident. A medical helicopter was initially paged and was later canceled after Shoemaker was pronounced dead.

Shoemaker was living in Logan attending school at USU. His Facebook page said he graduated from Stanwood High School last summer.
