LOGAN – The Loveland Living Planet Aquarium is a public aquarium which houses 4,500 animals representing 550 species with main four exhibits.

It opened in February of 1999 in Draper, at the south end of the Salt Lake Valley.

Utah State University signed an agreement last week with the aquarium which will allow USU students to study marine science.

Students will receive hands-on training now that USU’s S.J. & Jessie E. Quinney College of Natural Resources has created the only marine science minor available in Utah. And with a major in the works, Edd Hammill, USU Watershed Sciences department head, said combining the expertise and resources of both institutions will create unique opportunities for students and the community.

Ample field experience is available to students since the same exact wetland plants found in the Great Salt Lake also grow along the coast of the Chesapeake Bay, while Bear Lake’s deep-water systems are a powerful proxy for marine deep-water systems.

Several on-campus groups will participate in the new agreement including the biology and geology departments, the College of Veterinary Medicine and Edith Bowen Laboratory School.
