LOGAN – Utah State University Extension wants people exploring the outdoors to do more to protect themselves than apply sunscreen to keep from getting sun burned. They want people spending time outdoors to be on the lookout for five dangerous animals that could hamper their time in the wild.

Utah’s outdoors can have breathtaking views when hiking or camping but everyone should remember they are sharing space with wildlife, and they should be prepared to handle themselves when running into dangerous wildlife.

Sometimes even enjoying time in a backyard could lead to a wildlife confrontation.

Here are five animals you might encounter with tips on how to deal with them:

Moose: Found in Big Cottonwood Canyon, Logan Canyon and the Wasatch Front. Moose may look calm, but they can charge, especially bulls during rut or cows with calves. Do not approach or feed. Stay calm and slowly back away in the direction you came.

Black Bears: Bear sightings are on the rise. Most conflicts involve food left out at campsites or near homes. Never feed or approach a bear. Stand your ground and make yourself look as large as possible. Don’t run away or climb a tree.

Cougars: Rare but serious. Cougars may follow hikers, especially on remote trails or canyons. Stand tall, make noise, and don’t run. Make yourself look large, and maintain eye contact.

Coyotes: Can be seen near neighborhoods. They are curious and sometimes bold. Keep pets leashed, and secure food and trash. Do not approach if you see one. Shout at it, wave your arms, and back away slowly.

Rattlesnakes: Common in rocky, sunny areas. Most bites happen when people accidentally step on them. Stay on trails, wear closed-toe shoes, and keep dogs close. If you hear a rattle, don’t panic, just identify where the sound is coming from and move away from it.

Utah’s wild spaces are worth exploring, and a little awareness goes a long way in keeping everyone safe.
