LOGAN – The 2025 Undergraduate Research Day at Utah’s Capitol on Thursday, Feb. 20 will include about 30 Utah State University scholars presenting research posters to state legislators.
It is an annual event, which began in 2000, inviting scholars from USU and the University of Utah to Capitol Hill to highlight the importance of university research to local communities.
Brendon Guinn, an undergraduate researcher in the lab of USU Chemistry and Biochemistry faculty mentor Ryan Jackson, will be one of the USU student researchers attending Thursday.
Guinn said he has learned through his research that many bacteria develop an immune system, known as CRISPR, to defend themselves against invading viruses.
Guinn chose USU because he wanted to pursue medical studies and as a freshman he read about Dr. Jackson’s CRISPR research.
CRISPR is a technology that research scientists use to selectively modify the DNA of living organisms.
