USU VICE PRESIDENT AND ATHLETICS DIRECTOR JOHN HARTWELL IN RESPONSE TO TORREY GREEN STORIES:

I take allegations of sexual assault extremely seriously, and we in USU Athletics take action — decisive and immediate action — as soon as it’s appropriate. That is our record to this point in the football program when a player breaks team rules, and it will always be our record in every Athletics program.

Coach Wells during his tenure as head coach has a proven track record for disciplining and dismissing players, and he does not wait for an arrest to trigger action. He has dismissed key players for violating the team rules, and he applies his standards consistently – whether the person is on the scout team or a first-team impact player. Within the last 14 months, Coach Wells has dismissed two all-conference student athletes.

Athletics has taken a pro-active approach to educating our student-athletes about the issue of sexual assault. We educate all our student-athletes every year about the prevention and reporting of sexual assault. The football program, in particular, now brings in local law enforcement experts to talk to players about the issue of sexual assault.

The University is conducting a thorough inquiry into all aspects of this matter, including taking a close look at every action taken by the Athletics program. We welcome that inquiry. We already have been cooperating fully with the inquiry, and we will continue that cooperation.
