LOGAN — Logan City School District (LCSD) Superintendent Frank Schofield returned as a guest on KVNU’s For the People program last week.

This month he featured a much needed service in the school district, the Family Resource Center. Schofield said the center aligns with a lot of conversations taking place across the state.

“There’s been a big focus over the last 18 months, probably, on what are called ‘Teen Centers’ in school districts across the state. These are facilities that are being set up to provide additional support to students who are experiencing homelessness, perhaps they’re living in abusive situations, and they need a place to be safe. If they’re homeless, they need a place to stay, a place where they can access food, where they can wash their clothes, they can bathe, they can get academic support and things like that.”

He said the Family Resource Center is not a shelter, not a place where families can stay overnight, but it is designed to provide support for families in the district who either are experiencing homelessness or are migrant families, etc.

“We have access to a clothing supply, especially if they’re sure the family is short on winter clothing. Our staff there help these families make connections with local service providers, for example, we have food vouchers to the Cache Food Pantry, we make connections with Workforce Services for families that are looking for jobs and are new to the community. There are a significant number of students and their families who need this help.”

The center is at 50 S 400 East in Logan and is available Monday through Friday from 8a.m. to 330p.m.by appointment.

In the LCSD, they are known as the ‘Two Veronica’s’ that help the Family Resource Center keep going.   Schofield had high praise for the two women.

They were guests along with Schofield on the program. Veronica Castro said they have had support from other districts in the state and they’ve learned things from their programs.

“Of course, the needs for our district are a little bit different, and so, it’s been really good to speak with the families, ask what they need, work with our superintendent as well, and really see how we can best serve these families.

Laundry was kind of a big resource that was really needed in our school district, as well as providing some food. The food pantry we do have available, however in the summer, students were able to come and plant in the community garden in the back and be able to take some of those things home with them.”

Veronica Cruz said they have students in ten different language groups who they try to help in the district.

“We help everybody, all the students, when we try (to)give support to the student and say ‘this is really important, you come every single day to the school. It’s really important(that) you stay here because in the future you (will) have a better life.’”

Cruz said they are happy to accept donations from the community. Right now they have a critical need for jackets and coats, actually everything for the winter, like hats and gloves too.
