WELLSVILLE — Wellsville city, along with other three other local cities, is holding Truth in Taxation public hearings.  These are legally required public hearings that are offered any time a proposed change to property taxes is on the docket for voters to decide on , or for councils to decide.

On KVNU’s For the People program last week, Wellsville city council member Denise Lindsay talked about what the public needs to know about the proposed change.

“What we’re doing is we’re actually holding our rate. In tax terms, that’s kind of confusing for a lot of people because they don’t understand how property tax is calculated. The property tax rate of Wellsville city is .00949, which is the same amount that we’ve collected the last three years,” Lindsay explained.

However, with inflation, she said everyone’s market and property values have gone up so much that the tax rate tends to fluctuate.

“With Truth in Taxation, the Utah state law requires that you receive the same amount that you did last year, so with that happening, because values have (gone) up, Wellsville city’s tax rate would actually be less than that .009 percent. So, what Wellsville city is proposing is just that we hold our rate, and then, therefore, collect the same amount that we would if the rate stayed the same.”

Lindsay said what has some people concerned is a talked about 49 percent increase. She explained, though, that it’s not actually going up by that much, the rate is staying the same, but the city’s revenue will increase by that 49 percent.

It will all be explained at the public hearing to be held this Wednesday evening, August 17th at 630p.m.in the Wellsville city hall.

If any cannot make it to the hearing, they can call the city office if they have questions about it.
