SALT LAKE CITY—Utah Treasurer Marlo M. Oaks announced the launch of a new statewide investment challenge for Utah students in grades 4th to 12th.

The Utah Treasure’s Investment Challenge, which is a 10-week simulation of Wall Street investing, provides a framework for students to learn about the economy as well as financial markets. This new challenge will replace the Stock Market Game.

Administered by the Office of State Treasurer and the Utah Financial Empowerment Coalition, the challenge would allow teams of three to five students to invest a hypothetical $100,000 in common stocks and diversified investment funds during the simulation.

The participating teams are then ranked on the ending value of their investment portfolios.

“When integrated with other curriculum, the simulation helps students understand stock market dynamics, how future revenue and earnings growth expectations drive stock prices, the risks involved in short-term market fluctuations, and other investment concepts,” Oaks said.

Since the program is funded by donations from community partners, there is no cost to teachers or their schools for students to participate.

Cache Valley students have participated in the Stock Market Game in previous years and have placed:
