LOGAN — A 61-year-old transient man with a lengthy criminal history has been arrested for allegedly stealing a motorized wheelchair from Utah State University, according to law enforcement. Clark Stewart Porter was booked Thursday into the Cache County Jail.

According to the arrest affidavit, the electric wheelchair belonged to the Utah Assistive Technology Program at USU. It was valued at $21,000.

On April 28, USU employees reported the wheelchair missing. It was later determined that Porter had allegedly entered the Janet Quinney Lawson Building on the Logan Campus and removed the wheelchair after business hours.

A Cache County Sheriff’s deputy later located Porter in possession of the wheelchair. Law enforcement also located drugs in the suspect’s pocket.

According to jail records, Porter was booked on suspicion of committing felony theft and burglary, along with misdemeanors for possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

Porter has been previously convicted of theft and drug charges in Salt Lake City. He is being held in jail without bail, pending arraignment of formal charges in Logan’s 1st District Court.

Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
