SALT LAKE CITY — Top leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints say temples are going to gradually return to normal operations, as temporary restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic end.

In a letter to church leaders around the world, the faith’s First Presidency thanked members for their patience. The change is due to more people being immunized.

The Tuesday letter said, “We are eager to return the temples to full operation as soon as possible.”

The return to normal will include eliminating the face mask requirement and capacity restrictions, based on local circumstances. Decisions on when restrictions end will be made by temple presidencies and area presidencies, in consultation with the church’s Temple Department.

Even as mask requirements were lifted for many local religious services, mandates remained in place for temples. Leaders had stressed their desire to keep temples open on a limited basis and prevent particularly older patrons from becoming sick.

The letter concluded, “We are grateful for the sacred work performed in temples. We trust that our members will rejoice in the lessening of restrictions and will increase their commitment to temple and family history work.”

The First Presidency invited all temple presidencies to prepare plans to return to full capacity.
