Local performing arts troupes Music Theatre West and the Four Seasons Theatre Company are planning to host an unusual joint audition on Dec. 12 and 13 at Sky View High School for their upcoming spring productions. Those shows will be the musical dramas ‘Catch Me If You Can’ and ‘Anastasia’.
SMITHFIELD – Local performers will be standing in line when two local theater companies join forces to hold auditions for actors and actresses for their upcoming spring productions.
Those shows will be the musical dramas Catch Me If You Can (slated by Music Theatre West to debut on Feb. 23, 2024) and Anastasia (set by Four Seasons Theatre Company with its debut on April 4, 2024).
The joint auditions for those productions will be held Dec. 12 and 13 at Sky View High School here in Smithfield.
Based on the 2002 movie of the same name, the stage version of Catch Me If You Can features a score by the composing team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and a script by Terrence McNally.
The drama was inspired by the real-life adventures of con artist Frank Abagnale Jr., a suburban kid in the early 1960s who left home before graduating from high school and parlayed a gift for telling tall tales and forging checks into an around-the-world crime spree.
Departing from MTW tradition, Catch Me If You Can will be directed by Celeste Baillio and be staged in the Utah Theatre in downtown Logan from Feb. 23 to Mar. 9, 2024.
Anastasia is also based a film, a 1997 animated feature by Don Bluth. The drama features music and lyrics by the renowned composing team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, whose previous Broadway hits have included the musicals Once Upon This Island and Suessical, among others.
Anastasia breathes life into legend of the Russian Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna, who was rumored in the 1920 and 1930s to have escaped the execution of her family following the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917.
The musical was recently staged for packed audiences by the Opera Program at Utah State University.
The Four Seasons production of Anastasia will be directed by Jon Rash. It will be staged at Sky View High School in Smithfield, running from April 4 to 13, 2024.
Local performers are being urged to mark their calendars for the Dec. 12 and 13 joint auditions, where they will have the opportunity to try-out for one or both productions.
For anyone who might not be available on either of those dates, the directors advise that video submission of their auditions will be accepted until Dec. 11, 2023. They also recommend, however, that performers attend the auditions in-person if at all possible.
Additional information about the joint audition will be announced soon, they added.
