LOGAN — An address by Blake Smith, who has worked with the state of Utah on the medical cannabis board, will be given to graduate students on Wednesday at Utah State University.  On KVNU’s For the People program on Tuesday, Smith talked about a little bit about what will be discussed.

“We’re going to go through everything about plant physiology of the cannabis plant, how to extract, how you can make medicine and isolate specific cannabinoids and how they physiologically have specific effects for different ailments,” he explained

Smith has educational history in epidemiology, biochemistry and more.  He is also the CEO of Zions Medicinal, a research organization that takes the chemistry approach to medicinal marijuana.

“When you take medicine you want to be able to find out where it goes in the body, how it metabolizes, what areas or organs does it affect, how do you get rid of that molecule, all that stuff.  So….I basically based on that training, decided that we should be treating cannabis the same way that we treat aspirin or anything else. So that’s kind of what I’m trying to do.”

For those who would like to learn more about how this is being used or researched scientifically, Smith encourages them to check out UtahMarijuana.org.
