Heritage Elementary School
NIBLEY — Law enforcement were called to Heritage Elementary School after a suspicious individual was seen on school grounds. The incident prompted administrators to conduct a hall check, keeping students inside classrooms, while an investigation was conducted.
Cache County School District Spokesperson Tim Smith said around 9:10 a.m. a male individual was seen walking through the school’s playground. The man was described as wearing a black trench coat or cloak.
Cache County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the school to try and locate the suspicious individual. They also verified the school’s exterior doors were locked and secured.
Smith said the school initiated a hall check as a precaution, while law enforcement responded.
Deputies reviewed camera footage from the school. They were able to see the suspect walking through the playground while talking on a cell phone. He reportedly never made any contact with students or attempted to enter the school. He walked through the playground and then into a nearby neighborhood.
Smith said once administrators determined the individual was not on school grounds and didn’t appear to be a threat, the hall check was lifted.
Cache County Sheriff’s Lt. Mikelshan Bartschi said they work closely with school administrators in any situation to make sure kids are kept safe.
Although it may have appeared to be a false alarm, Smith said administrators take each situation seriously to ensure the safety of students and school employees.
