LOGAN – On the day it was officially announced by the Utah State University basketball program that assistant coach Chris Jones is leaving for the University of Utah, it appeared his position was filled.

In a Facebook post by Julie Nelson, she said her husband, former Aggie basketball player Spencer Nelson, will rejoin the Aggies as an assistant coach.

“A completely unexpected job change has been offered to Spencer as an Assistant Coach at Utah State University,” she wrote. “This amazing opportunity came up recently and we feel like it is the right thing for our family. We will be moving up to Logan to join back with our Aggies and are excited about our new adventure, especially since we love Logan and Utah State so much.”

Nelson, a Pocatello, Idaho native, played forward for the Aggies in 1999 before serving an LDS mission in Oklahoma. He returned to the program as a redshirt in 2002, then played from 2003 to 2005. He played professionally in Europe until last year, when he announced his retirement.
