LOGAN — A 68-year-old Smithfield man died Saturday afternoon in a single vehicle accident in Nibley.

Logan City Police Capt. Tyson Budge said David Ottley was driving a 1999 Toyota Tacoma north on US 89/91. Near 3100 South the truck swerved into oncoming traffic, crossed the southbound lanes, vaulted off the roadway and landed in a field.

The truck reportedly hit a metal pole piercing the vehicle’s engine and impaling Ottley.

Chief Gary Jensen said witnesses told police the vehicle left the roadway and didn’t appear to brake or take evasive action. Others reported Ottley may have been unconscious before leaving the roadway.

Emergency personnel were called to the accident and transported Ottley by ambulance to Logan Regional Hospital. He was later pronounced dead.

Jensen said fortunately no other vehicles were involved. State medical examiners will determine the exact cause of death.
