November 22, 1929 – May 13, 2022 (age 92)

Sherril Grant Jewkes, our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, age 92 of Providence, UT passed away peacefully on May 13, 2022, in the comfort of his home while being cared for by his family.

Grant was born on November 22, 1929, in Orangeville, UT to Gardner Lee and Jennie Curtis Jewkes. He was the fifth of six children.

Growing up, the family was poor and learned to work hard and be appreciative. Grant helped with the many family farm chores including raking hay into their horse-drawn wagon. Their only form of transportation was horses so Grant learned to ride almost before he learned to walk.

At the age of 10, his father suddenly passed away completely changing their lives. Grant’s family moved to Midvale. There he and his brothers shoveled coal off railroad cars, worked on beet farms, and ran paper routes to help support their mother. In 1948, he graduated Jordan High School. The next year he was called to serve in the Texas Louisiana Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Grant’s mission became the foundation of his testimony carrying him through his life with a strong desire to learn, live, and share the gospel.

From 1952 to 1954, Grant served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Europe. Upon returning, he attended the University of Utah while teaching early morning Seminary. In 1956, he married Karma Lee Chamberlain and they were blessed with six children: Donald, Cherylee, Becky Lynn, Boyd, Gerald, and Kathy. Grant and Karma would eventually divorce.

By 1958, Grant had earned a bachelor’s degree – majoring in speech and drama and minoring in history. He moved his family to Pleasant Grove, UT, and for the next 10 years taught Seminary full-time and loved it! He also earned his master’s degree in administration from Brigham Young University in 1968. Grant then spent twenty-seven years working as a school counselor for the Granite School District positively affecting the lives of countless children.

In 1969, Grant met his eternal sweetheart, Carole Spendlove Jewkes, and they married on February 2, 1970. Carole brought to the marriage four additional children: Becky, David, Linda, and Victor. Soon they added to the family their last child, Tom. They were later sealed in the Provo Temple.

As a faithful member of his church, Grant served in numerous capacities throughout his life. Most notable were the three missions he served with his wife, Carole: first in the Salt Lake Addiction Recovery Program; second in the East Lansing, Michigan LDS Institute; and third as teachers in the Mountain Crest High School Special Needs Seminary. In 2005, Grant and Carole moved to Providence, UT. In their retirement, they served faithfully as temple workers and nearly every week attended at least one temple session until his passing.

One of Grant’s favorite things was camping – especially at the annual Jewkes Reunion in Joe’s Valley, UT with both his immediate and extended family. This he did faithfully from 1965 until just a few years before his death. He also loved sports – especially BYU football. He often bought season tickets so he could attend all of their home games. His love of horses likewise endured throughout his life.

Most of all, Grant loved the gospel and his family. His wife was his best friend and they shared a deep love of Jesus Christ, the restored gospel, and the opportunity to share it. His devotion to Carole was a pure example of Christ-like love, especially as he compassionately cared for her these last few years. He had a tender heart and wore his emotions on his sleeve. His powerful priesthood blessings, generosity, and mighty testimony will never be forgotten. He will also be remembered for his endless supply of goodies to share, warm smiles & hugs, joyful whistling, never allowing any of his grandkids to beat him at chess, and his booming Jewkes voice.

Grant is survived by his wife Carole Spendlove Jewkes and their eleven children. Donald Grant (Denise) Jewkes of Murray, UT; Cherylee Jewkes of Farmington, UT; Becky Marcyes (Gary) James of Pleasant Grove, UT; Becky Lynn (Richard) Leach of Pleasant Grove, UT; David (Raquel) Marcyes of River Heights, UT; Boyd (Kerri) Jewkes of Kaysville, UT; Gerald (Maile) Jewkes of Orem, UT; Linda (Bob) Brady of South Jordan, UT; Kathy Roush (Craig Doelfel) of Farmington, UT; Victor (Annette) Jewkes of North Logan, UT; and G.
