RICHMOND – There is a whole lot happening in Richmond this week. What started out as a bunch of local dairymen bringing their best Holsteins to be judged early on has turned into a prestigious national event attracting dairies from across the country.

Holly Karren the Richmond city manager said there were 13 states represented in this year’s competition.

“There were 305 entries this year,” she said. ”Black and White Days has been going for 110 years and is the is the longest running Holstein show in the country, so it’s a big deal.”  

On Tuesday, Cole Nickerson from California was primping a Holstein he brought to show as did Jason Hale from Oregon and Quinn Dum from Pennsylvania. They were all preparing their animals to show.

Several Future Farmers of America students from Idaho were soaking in Richmond’s 110-year anniversary of the Black and White Days.

The Hamburger Stand manned by Richmond City Youth Council will get going from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Food trucks will invade the city Saturday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. as the activities get into full swing.

Showing the animals begins in the mornings at 9 a.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 13 and 14. More shows will be going on during the week in the afternoons check the website for times.

As part of this year’s celebration there will be a ribbon cutting for the Black and White Building remodel located at 30 S. State from 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 15.

On Friday, May 16, there will be a free concert held at the baseball diamond area featuring the Jerica Jamison Band from 7:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. A fireworks show will follow the concert.

Although there are many activities during the week, Saturday May 17 is when the bulk of the activities really get going. There will be a Pancake Breakfast from 7:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. to be held in the Lee’s parking lot located at 185 North 200 West in Richmond.

The Cow A Bunga 5-K, 10-K and 1 mile runs will begin at 8 a.m. The Stampede Bike Race will start at 10 a.m. with 25-mile and 50-mile races.

From 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. there will be a Dairy Food Show at the Park Community Center located at 90 S. 100 W.

Art and fun family activities will also be going on all day.

The Park Bench, a senior community center located in the north end of the Park Community Center, is sponsoring an exhibition of artwork created by artists from Richmond and surrounding communities from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The Daughters of the Utah Pioneers’ Family Heritage Quilt Show will feature modern, and heritage quilts will also be on display there.

The newly-renovated Relic Hall, located at 29 S. Main, will be open for tours from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The Black & White Days Parade will be held at 5 p.m. beginning at 600 South State Street, heading north, turns west at Main Street, then turns north at 100 West, ending at 100 W. 100 N.
