RICH COUNTY, Utah — Law enforcement is investigating a report of possible gunfire directed near an adult and a child, according to the Rich County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched on Sept. 27 at approximately 8:18 a.m. following a call from a citizen reporting potential shots fired in their vicinity. The reporting individual told dispatchers that they heard approximately six sounds believed to be bullets striking the ground nearby.

Rich County Sheriff Dale Stacey and responding deputies arrived at the scene shortly after the call to initiate an investigation. Over the course of the ongoing inquiry, investigators have identified and interviewed several individuals to determine what occurred.

Although preliminary investigative efforts have not yet uncovered physical evidence to substantiate that gunfire took place, sheriff’s officials stressed that all reports involving potential hazards to community members are handled with urgency.

“Public safety remains our top priority, and we are committed to thoroughly investigating this report, evaluating all available information, and following up on any additional leads,” the department said in an official media release.

The sheriff’s office confirmed that the case remains open and active as investigators work to evaluate information and follow up on leads.

Authorities encourage anyone with information regarding the reported incident, or who may have heard suspicious noises in the area on the morning of Sept. 27, to contact the Rich County Sheriff’s Office and reference Case Number 26-R956.
