LOGAN — A 29-year-old Logan man faces two second-degree felony counts of forcible sexual abuse after allegedly assaulting a 15-year-old girl inside a local residence on her birthday, according to court documents filed Friday.
The formal criminal cases were filed against Carlos Adolfo Guzman in Logan’s 1st District Court. The felony charges follow an investigation conducted by the Logan City Police Department and the Utah Division of Child and Family Services.
According to a probable cause statement, a child welfare officials initially submitted a Child Abuse Neglect Report to law enforcement on Aug. 20 regarding allegations against Guzman. Investigators identified the Logan man as the former boyfriend of the victim’s mother who had previously resided at the home where the alleged abuse occurred.
During an Aug. 28 forensic interview at the Children’s Justice Center, the alleged victim disclosed details regarding the incident in Logan, stating it occurred May 2 inside the downstairs bathroom of a residence. The girl stated she was inside the bathroom when Guzman entered the room, claiming he wanted to congratulate her on her 15th birthday, and attempted to force a hug upon her.
When the girl refused and instructed him to get away from her, Guzman extended his right hand, forcefully groped her chest, court records state. The victim told investigators the non-consensual touching made her feel terrible and caused her to cry.
Following the encounter, the girl disclosed a partial account of the incident to her mother, who subsequently evicted Guzman from the residence.
The alleged victim also disclosed a pattern of prior continuous abuse that occurred in Miami, Florida, when she was 12 and 13 years old. During those instances, Guzman allegedly demanded a kiss while shirtless and later laid beside her in underwear while her mother was hospitalized, touching her and explicitly soliciting sexual acts. The girl stated she hid the prior abuse out of fear because Guzman was aggressive and had previously physically kicked her mother in the back.
Guzman is being held in the Cache County Jail pending further proceedings in First District Court.
Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
