LOGAN – In a brief but moving ceremony, the Cache County Republicans and like-minded local residents observed Flag Day on Saturday, June 14 at the Cache County Historic Courthouse.
The 30-minute event at the courthouse square included the traditional flag-raising by youthful cadets from the Civil Air Patrol, a firing party from the American Legion and remarks from members of the Cache COP and campus Republicans from Utah State University.
Utah Rep. Mike Petersen gave an inspiration speech that traced the history of the American flag from the Revolution of 1776, through Francis Scott Key’s writing of the lyrics of the national anthem during the War of 1812 into modern times.
The local event commemorated the adoption of the American flag by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777.
The 13 stripes on the flag represented the original 13 British colonies and the stars symbolized the new constellation of states, according to Encyclopedia Britannica.
While Flag Day is a widely observed day of celebration across the country, it is not a federally recognized holiday.
Flag Day is most often celebrated with parades, flag displays and patriotic observances to honor the American flag and the nation’s history.
Later that same day, the courthouse square was slated to be occupied by another anti-Trump protest, this one demanding that U.S. troops be withdrawn from the City of Los Angeles.
