LOGAN — A 41-year-old Providence man has been arrested for allegedly stealing a new truck from a Logan dealership, according to law enforcement. Anthony Michael Smith was booked Friday into the Cache County Jail after a warrant had been issued for his arrest.

According to the warrant affidavit, Logan City Police officers were called to investigate the theft in August. Smith had reportedly purchased the new Ford F150 truck, claiming to wire transfer $33,504 to the dealership.

When the company reported to never receiving the funds, Smith claimed he had been involved in a family emergency but was on his way to the dealership with a cashier’s check from Bank of America. He never made it but had texted a photo of the check.

Police inspected the photo and reported that it appeared to be a generic sample check from the internet. Officials with Bank of America also reported Smith didn’t have an account with them, the warrant affidavit detailed.

Officers attempted to visit Smith’s residence and last known address in Layton several times unsuccessfully. His phone number was also disconnected.

Police tracked Smith’s social media account and determined that he had been in multiple states since the theft had been reported. Posts showed that he had traveled to Nevada, New Mexico, and Wyoming, while working as a mobile DJ.

According to jail records, Smith was booked on suspicion of theft of an operable vehicle and communications fraud, both second-degree felonies; and two counts of forgery, a third-degree felony. He is being held on $15,000 bail.

Smith is scheduled to appear March 3 in Logan’s 1st District Court. He could face over 15 years in prison, if convicted.

Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
