Sara Mohrman from Tremonton city and Gary Saxton, Logan Downtown Alliance director, talk with KVNU For the People host Jason Williams.

LOGAN — The Logan Downtown Alliance has enjoyed a great deal of success shining a spotlight on downtown Logan and similar efforts are underway in other northern Utah cities and towns. On KVNU’s For the People program on Monday, Sara Mohrman from Tremonton city, said, like other areas, her city is evolving.

“We, like everyone else, we’re experiencing growth, but with that growth comes a lot of new people, new ideas, new things. I’m actually someone’s that’s relatively new, I’ve only lived here three and a half years myself. But we’ve seen new businesses coming in, we’re seeing new coffee shops, just a lot of things that are changing everyday,” she explained.

Mohrman said there are challenges when it comes to downtown areas like Tremonton. It’s so easy for people to hop in their car and go to a Big Box store.

“But we have so many resources in Tremonton in our little shops that people aren’t even aware of that you can get without having to leave Tremonton for those little things. Like  your coffee beans or some mugs, gifts or those things you don’t have to leave town”

She said it’s a re-education process that they are having to do.

Along with  Mohrman, Logan Downtown Alliance director Gary Saxton was on the same program and agreed that many people don’t realize what a treasure the downtown is.

“Sometimes we think, Sara and I, we really know our downtowns and the mistake that you can make is (to) think that everybody else knows your downtowns as well as you do. And so what I always have to keep checking myself is – our messaging needs to be to the community with the thought that the person I’m talking to doesn’t know anything about our downtown,” he said.

Saxton said they are constantly trying to get people to look at the downtown as a shopping and hang-out destination for the first time.

As far as Tremonton is concerned, Mohrman said a lot of events are coming soon, such as their Shop Local campaign that starts next week.

“It’s essentially 12 days of shopping, with a little passport, we’ll be launching Monday. It leads right up to our Holiday extravaganza in Midland Square on December 3rd  So this is actually something that has happened every year with Santa Claus in the square, however this year we’re actually….Tremonton Recreation, Tremonton Downtown and the library (are) all partnering together. So, we’ll have Santa Claus, we’re going to have the Grinch telling his story, we have activities for kids, we’re going to have an Ugly Sweater Contest,” she said.

Mohrman said they will announce the winners of their Shop Local campaign.
