LOGAN – Along with the lights and gingerbread homes on display downtown, Bluebird Candy is increasing its collection of large ornaments made from candy displayed in downtown Logan windows.

The large glass windows where people can see the chocolates being made before their eyes at Bluebird Candy have three commissioned, new, large ornaments to draw people’s attention.

Justin Hamilton, the candy company’s owner, started the tradition of hanging over-sized ornaments made from candy a few years ago and it has grown over the years to over a dozen pieces.

The large candy pieces are also in the windows of Bluebird restaurant and Cache Valley Bank located at Center and Main Street. Jump the Moon Art Studio, located at 48 N. 100 W. in Logan, also has one hanging in its window, as well as one in the window of the lobby at Utah Theater on Center Street.

“This year the theme is Christmas Around the World,” Hamilton said. “We have three new ones hanging in our window.”

The candy ornaments are intended to bring people downtown like the candy displays in Salt Lake City’s Macy’s windows.

For Jump the Moon, Michael Bingham had his artists come up with a thumbnail illustration of the ornament. Then they drew it out on the styrofoam blank and then filled it in with the candy.

It takes about 100 hours for each side and the final product weighs about 100 pounds. Not only did Hamilton give the artists candy, he also gave them the adhesive to attach it.

The creations take a lot of time so the artist usually need help to get it done. Some of the artists have their families, other artists, and people from all over participate in putting the ornaments together.

The ornaments add to the Christmas spirit on Center Street and Historic Downtown Logan. They are another way merchants are doing their best to attract people into their stores during the holiday season.
