MONTE CRISTO, Utah — One construction worker was killed and three others were injured Monday after a sudden gust of wind caused roof trusses to collapse at a cabin site in Rich County, authorities said.
The Rich County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 text message reporting the industrial accident at approximately 11:02 a.m. in the Wasatch Ridge area of Monte Cristo.
According to a preliminary investigation, contractors were installing the roof trusses on a cabin under construction when the wind gust struck. The sudden structural collapse knocked two workers completely off the roof and pinned a third worker beneath a heavy wooden truss.
A 56-year-old male worker died from his injuries at the scene. Emergency medical personnel reported that a 42-year-old male sustained critical injuries and was flown by air ambulance to a regional hospital. A 29-year-old male was taken to a nearby medical facility by ground ambulance, while a fourth injured worker was treated at the scene for less severe injuries.
The identities of the victims have not yet been publicly released by local authorities.
Medical crews from Woodruff EMS, Randolph EMS, and Weber County responded to the emergency call. Additional on-scene assistance was provided by the Utah Department of Natural Resources, the Rich County Sheriff’s Office, and the Weber County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s officials extended their deepest condolences to the family, friends, and coworkers of the deceased man, while praising the rapid response of all first responders who assisted.
