LOGAN — Law enforcement is investigating a bomb threat Tuesday at Utah State University. Old Main was evacuated just before 2:45 p.m. after a suspicious package was found.

USU spokesperson Amanda DeRito said police responded to Old Main due to the suspicious package. People inside the building were instructed to leave immediately using the nearest exit and take only essential items.

Police set up a perimeter around the building and closed off Champ Drive. They also checked vehicles parked nearby.

According to emergency radio communications at the time of the incident, law enforcement detonated the package.

Workers in the Admissions Department later called law enforcement reporting a suspicious package at their office, in the basement of the Taggart Student Center. The package was later deemed legitimate.

University officials later released a statement confirming that a suspicious device was found near the exterior of Old Main. “University and local law enforcement were dispatched to the scene. A device was located and deemed to be a non-explosive device. Out of an abundance of caution, the bomb squad detonated the suspicious device. Old Main building is now clear and safe. All scheduled events may resume as normal.”

The incidents occurred as law enforcement prepared for the Turning Point USA organization to hold its first major event since the death of its founder Charlie Kirk. The USU event was moved to the Spectrum where additional security measures included threat assessment, detailed security planning, crowd management, and close protection for the speakers. The event is still scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
