LOGAN — The Bear River Health Department has confirmed the first measles case in an unvaccinated individual in Cache County.
Health officials are conducting contact tracing to notify people who may have been exposed and to prevent further spread of the virus. Officials will not release any further information about the case due to medical privacy laws.
The health department identified two locations where public exposure may have occurred:
- Intermountain Budge Clinic, 1350 North 500 East in Logan, on Sept. 15 between 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
- Chick-fil-A, 40 South Hwy 165 in Providence, on Sept. 11 between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Measles is a highly contagious disease, but outbreaks are rare because of a highly effective vaccine. The health department said it is taking immediate action to contain the situation.
Symptoms of measles typically appear seven to 14 days after exposure. They can include a high fever, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes, and a rash that starts on the face and spreads downward.
Anyone experiencing symptoms, especially if they are unvaccinated or have been exposed to a known case, should contact their healthcare provider immediately. To prevent further spread, call a healthcare provider before visiting a clinic, emergency room or urgent care facility.
The best way to prevent measles is through vaccination. The measles vaccine is safe and highly effective, providing lifelong protection for most people. Individuals who are unsure of their vaccination status should check their immunization records and consult their healthcare provider. Most Utahns’ immunization records are available through the secure Docket app, which can be accessed through the health department’s website.
The measles vaccine is widely available at local pharmacies, doctors’ offices or the Bear River Health Department.
