LOGAN — A 32-year-old North Logan man is headed to prison for sexually abusing a young girl five years ago. Nyunt Lewin was originally arrested in 2023 following an investigation by the Logan City Police Department.
Lewin was sentenced June 2 in Logan’s First District Court. He previously accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to aggravated sexual abuse of a child, amended to a second-degree felony.
According to Logan City Police Lt. Derek Dickey, officers were contacted in the end of June 2023 by the victim. She described several incidences when she was molested by Lewin, who was considered to be a person of trust.
The girl explained how Lewin had threatened her at knife point if she didn’t comply during one incident. Other times he reportedly threatened her if she told her parents about what was happening.
Police determined the crimes occurred in 2020.
During Monday’s sentencing, defense attorney Cameron Cox explained how Lewin had a traumatic childhood, growing up in a refugee camp after fleeing his home in Burma.
Judge Spencer Walsh said he couldn’t imagine the experiences Lewin suffered but also noted how the defendant had a drinking problem. “You need to avoid alcohol for the rest of your life,” he told the North Logan man.
Lewin was sentenced to serve between 1-15 years in the Utah State Correctional Facility.
Cox said he planned to appeal the sentence immediately.
