LOGAN — A 51-year-old Nibley man has confessed to sexually abusing two young girls years ago. Luis Leon accepted a plea that could send him to prison now for up to 12 years.
Leon participated in a change of plea hearing Monday afternoon in 1st District Court in Logan. He pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony.
Cache County deputy attorney Ronnie Keller explained how Leon inappropriately touched the two girls in 2007 and 2012. Both were under the age of 14 at the time the crimes occurred.
In April 2022, one of the victims contacted deputies at the Cache County Sheriff’s Office. She explained how Leon, a family acquaintance, sexually abused her multiple times inside his home.
The victim provided deputies with a recorded phone call, where she confronted Leon about the allegations. During the recording, he blamed his actions on being sexually abused in a similar way when he was a child. He also claimed that he thought it was normal and asked for forgiveness.
Leon was arrested in July 2022. He has been held in the Cache County Jail while the case against him proceeded through the court.
As part of Monday’s plea deal, prosecutors agreed to drop 11 remaining charges against Leon. They will also ask for no more than two terms of six-years-to-life in prison, at sentencing.
Leon spoke briefly through a Spanish interpreter, waiving his right to a fair trial and pleading “guilty” to the charges. He was ordered to remain in jail and appear for sentencing August 21.
