LOGAN – A national sports communication strategist returned to his hometown in Cache Valley on April 1st to talk with Utah State University students about his one-of-a-kind career path.
Brett Jewkes grew up with a love for sports, a love that would take him across the country to work for sport titans like NASCAR and the PGA tour in the communications and management fields.
“I was this stupid kid from North Logan, Utah, and I was standing on the field at Fenway Park at the All-Star Game…and I was like, people are paying me to do this? It was crazy,” Jewkes said.
He shared his insight and experience from the sports business world with students interested in pursuing careers in communication and media.
“Culture and opportunity over compensation. Not some of the time, not part of the time, not when it’s convenient, every time. That’s my biggest advice,” Jewkes said.
Jewkes serves as the executive vice president and chief brand and communications officer for the Blank Family of Businesses and said he knew he belonged there after interviewing with Arthur Blank.
“Not one word about profit, not one word about revenue, not one word about business outcomes — one hundred percent about values,” Jewkes said.
Jewkes told students a key contributor to his career’s success was that chasing his passion always came first.
“I had to do something that fed my passion, that I liked, that I wanted to be there every day,” Jewkes said.
