MLMS History Teacher Ryan Mueller was named the 2022 Utah History Teacher of the Year.
LOGAN — The Gilder Lehrman Institute has named Mount Logan Middle School Teacher Ryan Mueller the 2022 Utah History Teacher of the Year.
“It’s a huge honor to get this recognition,” Mueller said. “I was honestly really surprised when I found out a couple of weeks ago.”
The award honors American history teachers from elementary school through high schools highlighting the importance of history education. The award goes to one teacher in each state, the District of Columbia, Department of Defense Schools and U.S. Territories.
Each winner of the award receives a certificate of recognition, a $1,000 award, Gilder Lehrman educational materials, recognition at a local ceremony and becomes one of 53 finalists for the 2022 National History Teacher of the Year Award. Each winner’s school will also become a Gilder Affiliate School.
The Logan City School District celebrated Mueller’s achievement during their School Board meeting on Tuesday.
“Ryan is just another example of the outstanding caliber of teachers that we have in our district,” Schofield said. “The work that he is able to do every day in his classroom is reflective of the positive things that we see happening across the district”
Mueller said he wants to teach students to be engaged citizens of their community.
“What I really ultimately want my students to be I want them to be engaged citizens,” Mueller said. “I want them to participate in their democracy and I believe to effectively participate we need to have a really solid understanding of our nation’s history.”
Schofield said Mueller does a good job at helping students connect with American history.
“He runs an engaging, focused class that as a former history teacher, I love seeing what he does,” Schofield said. “It’s just a fun class to be in as he helps students connect with U.S. History.”
The Gilder Lehrman Institute will announce the ten finalists for the National History Teacher of the Year in early fall.
