LOGAN – The US Forest Service Logan Ranger wants to alert motorists about traffic delays in Logan Canyon (Highway 89) for the summer. The Utah Department of Transportation is installing a fiber optic cable alongside Highway 89. UDOT expects short-term 20-minute delays, one way traffic, temporary signals, and an uneven road surface in different places along the 41-mile scenic byway.

Motorists should expect orange road construction barrels, heavy equipment, support vehicles and crew members along the roadside. The project began May 5 and is expected to continue for 18 months.

Cable installation is being installed to improve broadband access in Logan Canyon, allowing more reliable community connection for Logan City, Garden City, and Beaver Mountain Resort. The cable will strengthen and enhance communication capabilities, emergency service support and create opportunities for these communities to expand servicesĀ and improve connectivity.

Work will be done during daytime hours Monday through Friday with occasional weekend work. They expect to close construction during the winter and finish work in spring 2026.

UDOT will install mobile temporary signals, at various locations during the construction period.

The Forest Service said there will also be construction in Blacksmith Fork Canyon (Highway 101). The power line is being buried alongside Highway 101. The project is located East of AJ Peterson Park and will be moving towards Hardware Ranch throughout the summer of 2025. Expect heavy equipment, support vehicles and crew members along the roadside. There will be delays, one way traffic, and temporary signals at times.

The lowest elevation gates on Forest Service roads are open. These roads include Smithfield Canyon, Green Canyon (first gate), Card Canyon, and Left Hand Fork.

The Forest boundary gate in High Creek Canyon will open on May 15th.

Mid-elevation gates will open on June 1st. Mid-elevation gates include the second gates in High Creek and Green Canyon, the first gate in Temple Fork, Cowley Canyon, Herd Hollow and West Hodges.

High elevation gates will open on June 15th. High elevation gates include Marie Springs, the second gate in Temple Fork, Pole Line, Twin Creeks and Dip Hollow.

All dates are subject to change based on weather, flooding, road conditions, public health, and safety concerns.
