LOGAN — A 22-year-old man from southern Utah has been arrested for allegedly grabbing a backpack from a Logan service station, and then using a stolen credit card to make almost $1,000 in purchases, according to law enforcement. Levi Jason Black was booked March 28 following a traffic stop by a Logan City Police officer.

According to the arrest paperwork, police were called to a local auto mechanic shop on report of a theft, March 26. One of the employees reported their backpack had been stolen. It contained their wallet.

Security camera footage showed the alleged suspect, later identified as Black, walking into the garage and asking employees for a job. He was then seen walking into the bathroom and grabbing the backpack while leaving.

The suspect appeared to be a Hispanic male with short black hair, wearing a grey shirt and black pants, court documents detailed.

The alleged victim checked their bank account and found one of their credit cards had been used to make a $956.42 purchase. Another card had also been declined at a local bar.

Friday, police went to the bar and spoke to a waitress, who remembered serving a man matching the suspect’s description, whose card had been declined. Since the bar serves alcohol, Black had provided an Arizona license to enter the restaurant, according to the probable cause statement.

Later that night, police initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle and identified Black as the passenger. He was reportedly intoxicated and had several warrants for his arrest in other cases out of Arizona.

Officers questioned Black about the theft. He reportedly denied being at the mechanic shop but later admitted to taking the backpack.

According to jail records, Black was booked on several outstanding warrants. He has also been charged in Logan’s 1st District Court with two counts of unlawful use of a financial card and theft.

Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
