Logan officials have announced that 1400 North from 550 West to 600 West will be closed until August to allow for improvements to the railroad crossing east of the intersection of 1400 North and 600 West.
LOGAN – City officials say that the much-delayed improvements to the railroad crossing on 1400 North in Logan are finally about to begin.
Logan officials have announced that the project will begin on Monday, June 19 and is expected to continue through August.
Those improvements will include widening of the roadway east of the intersection at 1400 North and 600 West; the widening of the railroad crossing itself; and the installation of sidewalks and traffic signals.
For city crews to complete that work, 1400 North will be closed to traffic from 550 West to 600 West for the duration of the project.
“The closure will only affect the east leg of the intersection (at 1400 North and 600 West),” according to Darek Kimball, assistant city engineer.
He adds that 1400 North between 600 West and 1000 West will still be open to motorists, as will 600 West for northbound and southbound traffic.
Since early July of 2022, a dispute between the city and the Union Pacific railroad has constrained traffic flow through the intersection at 1400 North and 600 West.
Logan officials had previously widened 600 West and installed traffic signals at the intersection. But a disagreement over who would pay for maintaining the nearby railroad crossing forced city officials to cover those signals and revert the intersection into a four-way stop for motorists.
During the 2023 general session of the Legislature, however, state Rep. Casey Snider (R-Paradise) engineered the passage of House Bill 51 (Railroad Right of Way Amendments).
The mere threat of that bill brought Union Pacific officials back to the bargaining table where the dispute was ultimately resolved.
During an early March visit to the studios of KVNU, Logan Mayor Holly Daines told the “For the People” audience that the agreement with Union Pacific not only resolved concerns about the railroad crossing on 1400 North, but also provided an outline for dealing with three other railroad crossings in the future.
