LOGAN — On KVNU’s Speak to the Mayor program this past week, Logan Mayor Holly Daines continued to sing the praises of the new Logan Library building downtown (285 N. Main St).

The ribbon cutting was held on March 4tah and on that first day, Daines said they had over 2,400 people come through to check it out, and about 300 at the ribbon-cutting.

People wonder, from time to time, why the library is not on the countywide system.

“It was a ballot initiative, it was put on the ballot to see if everyone valley-wide wanted to pay a portion, and then the whole system would’ve received funding. Logan residents actually voted in favor of a countywide system, but it narrowly failed overall throughout the county,” she said.

The mayor said what is impressive with the new library, with it going vertical (in having three stories), it takes up a smaller footprint. So, they were able to create more parking spaces as well as a larger plaza out front that has beautiful public art.

A year ago the big spring clean-up by Logan City came to an end where Logan residents could just drag green waste onto the parking strip for pick-up.

But it has been offset, somewhat, with the city providing four green waste pickup locations. These will be operational from April 15th through the 26th at Lundstrom Park, Mount Logan Park, Merlin Olsen Park and Bridger Park.

“And again, it’s just a set period of two weeks in time, but we hope people will do that,” Daines explained. “We also have lowered the cost of a green can. So, instead of being $5/month, as of April 1st it will be $4/month. We’ve found that a lot of the loads that crews go through street by street and pick-up, they could fit in a green can over one or two or maybe three weeks.”

Daines said she hopes those who need green waste collection will sign up for the service if they haven’t already.

The mayor said we dodged the bullet last year when it came to flooding. However, she said the water shed is still at 124 percent of normal this year.

“Which is close to as high as it was last year,” she added. “Now last year we had the perfect scenario as far as temperatures and it came down slowly, and we really had almost no flooding. We were prepared with sandbags and everything else. We hope we have a good scenario again this year. (But) maybe at some point we’ll have to go back into flood preparation mode.”

She said if that were the case, spring clean-up would have to be put off anyway,  like it was last year.
