LOGAN — A 25-year-old Logan man with a history of assaults has admitted to attacking a man and holding him against his will. Ethan Drake Mortensen had been in the Cache County Jail since the latest arrest in July.

According to court records, Mortensen appeared Nov. 19 in Logan’s 1st District Court. He accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to aggravated assault, amended to a third-degree felony; and unlawful detention, amended to a class A misdemeanor.

According to prosecutors, Logan City Police officers were called to a Logan residence July 27, after Mortensen reportedly called 911, saying an individual had broken into his home. He said the individual broke the door down and that he took the man’s phone to call law enforcement.

As police arrived at the residence, they found no damage or sign of forced entry to the front door and the back door leading to a deck was found open. Mortensen was observed standing in the living room above a man, laying in the fetal position on the ground.

The man told police, he had been spending the night at Mortensen’s home. The two had been playing video games, eating pizza, and drinking alcohol. Later that evening, Ethan became angry.

The victim said Mortensen put him in a headlock and took his phone, as the man was attempting to leave. The defendant also began striking the man repeatedly.

Police reported the victim had multiple substantial injuries to his face, consistent with being assaulted. They also found the man’s backpack and belongings scattered in the kitchen and deck.

According to court records, Mortensen was convicted of assaulting his father during a drunken brawl in 2020, and was sentenced to serve 260 days in jail. He was later found guilty of reckless endangerment and assault in 2023, and ordered to serve 30 more days in behind bars.

During the Nov. 19 court hearing, Mortensen waived his rights and requested to be sentenced immediately. He was ordered to serve a term of zero to five years at the Utah State Correctional Facility.
