LOGAN — A 27-year-old Logan man has been arrested on suspicion of rape and unlawful detention after allegedly sexually assaulting a woman and later trapping her inside a Utah State University laundry room. Joseph Clayton Stacey was booked Tuesday into the Cache County Jail following an investigation by the USU Police Department.
According to an affidavit of probable cause, the investigation began Feb. 10 when Stacey contacted police officers and reported that he had engaged in nonconsensual sex with an adult woman. Investigators determined the alleged rape occurred in Providence in July 2025.
During an interview with law enforcement on March 10, Stacey confessed to the sexual assault. The alleged victim, whom Stacey identified to police, also confirmed the details of the incident.
Charging documents detailed how authorities later discovered that in February 2026, Stacey cornered the woman in a laundry room at a university housing facility. He blocked the exits against her wishes and refused to let her leave for an extended period.
Police report the university served a trespassing order against Stacey on Feb. 10 and warned him that the woman wanted no contact. Despite the order and the warning, Stacey allegedly continued to call and text the alleged victim, and sent her numerous payments through Zelle.
Stacy appeared Wednesday in Logan’s 1st District Court. He was charged with rape, a first-degree felony; stalking, a third-degree felony; and unlawful detention, a class B misdemeanor.
Cache County Deputy Attorney Aaron Jossie asked the court to hold Stacey without bail. He said the suspect posed a danger to the alleged victim.
Judge Brian Cannell agreed with Jossie and refused to grant bail. He assigned the Logan man a public defender and ordered him to appear again in court March 18.
Individuals arrested and charged in complaints are presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in court.
