LOGAN — Now that Spring is here it means grass cutting and tree trimming and things of that nature. Many people might forget you can just drive your green waste load into Logan city’s environmental facility.
On a recent KVNU For the People program, Logan conservation coordinator Emily Malik commented on how much green waste they actually in.
“But, our facility has grown quite a bit. So, I’m looking at some numbers here, in 2010 we were taking about 10,000 tons , and in the last five years I think our average is closer to about 17,000 tons a year. So, yeah, it’s growing quite significantly,” Malik explained.
She said that doesn’t take into account what happened in October 2021 with the early season heavy snow storm that brought down branches and some trees throughout the valley.
“Where we couldn’t really even begin, like, we just opened some emergency areas and let people bring their material down, no matter what time of day. We figure that was at least double our entire annual, if not more, amount of green waste that comes down, so we did have quite a bit sitting here, but…. all of it is shredded and used for some other purpose.”
As previously announced, due to flooding preparations, city crews are not doing the typical curbside Spring Cleanup, that normally happens in April, when crews come through each neighborhood and pick up branches and other green waste placed curbside.
In place of the curbside spring cleanup, they will be picking up bulk green waste from the following designated locations beginning Monday, May 1st through Monday, May 15th. Watch for orange cones designating the dumping locations at these parks: Lundstrom Park (parking stalls on 1350 North), Hyrum Gibbons Mt Logan Park parking lot, Merlin Olsen Park (east parking stalls) and Bridger Park.
Also, Logan City advises residents to consider subscribing to the curbside green waste program. Each can is $5 and green waste is collected weekly on your garbage day mid-March through mid-November each year. If you would like to sign up for a new green can, call 435-716-9755.
