LOGAN — A 39-year-old Preston, Idaho woman has been sentenced to jail and probation for assaulting a family member, leaving him with severe injuries. Shannon Leigh Karpowich and co-defendant Kelly G. Olson, 43, were arrested last fall following an investigation into the incident

According to court records, Karpowich was sentenced Feb. 2 in Logan’s 1st District Court. She had previously accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury and kidnapping, a second-degree felony.

On Oct. 27, 2025, Logan City police officers were called to the incident address and met with a 46-year-old man. He explained how he had gotten into an argument with his sister, who was playing music loudly in the home’s garage.

The man said that when he asked Karpowich to turn down the music, she punched him in the face. Olson and another unidentified female then reportedly held him down as Shannon continued punching him in the face and groin. As he got back to his feet, he was then shoved over a table, landing on his side.

The victim explained how he was currently recovering from two back surgeries and a broken foot. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment, where it was determined that he sustained three broken ribs and bruises to his groin.

During the investigation, police questioned Karpowich, who reportedly admitted to assaulting the victim and showed no remorse for his injuries. She claimed her brother had been the aggressor and had been choking her by the neck.

During the sentencing hearing Feb. 2, Karpowich was ordered to serve 90 days in jail, followed by 48 months of probation. She was also ordered to complete an anger management course, have no contact with the victim, and complete substance abuse and mental health treatment.

According to court records, Olson has been charged with aggravated kidnapping, a first-degree felony; and aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, a second-degree felony. He has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to appear again in court March 16.
